To achieve bokeh in an image, you will need use a fast lens. You will want to use a lens with at least an f/2.8 aperture. You will want to shoot with the lens wide open. You will do this by shooting Aperture Priority or manual. Manual will give you the ability to choose both your aperture and shutter speed. To increase the amount of bokeh visible in your photographs, one would increase the distance between your subject and the background. In order to do this you will need to decrease the distance between the camera and the subject. The more shallow depth or field the more out-of-focus it will be.
